Joan Lunden Reveals Early Career Harassment in New Memoir

“I felt vulnerable… but I stood up for myself,” veteran journalist says

Veteran television journalist Joan Lunden is opening up about a troubling experience early in her career — and it’s resonating with many who have faced similar struggles in male-dominated industries.

In her new memoir Joan: Life Beyond the Script, Lunden, now 75, recounts how a superior at a New York television station propositioned her when she was just beginning her professional journey — and how his behavior changed dramatically when she rejected his advances.

A Promising Start — With a Dark Turn

Before she became a household name and co-anchor of Good Morning America, Lunden worked at WABC-TV’s Eyewitness News in the mid-1970s. She recalls being invited by a colleague she refers to only as “Ted” to what was billed as a casual newsroom gathering on Fire Island.

Instead, she soon realized the invitation was something else — a setup for a double date. When she made it clear she was not interested in anything beyond friendship and chose not to share a room with him, the dynamic between them changed sharply.

Professional Retribution

What followed wasn’t just awkward – it was retaliatory.

Lunden writes that “Ted” began declining or shelving her news stories without reasonable explanation. Her work wasn’t aired, her reputation suffered in the newsroom, and because her compensation depended in part on on-air pieces, her income dropped as well. She describes feeling “vulnerable and helpless” as the pattern continued for months.

This wasn’t criticism of her reporting. It was personal — and it was damaging.

Taking a Stand

Lunden eventually decided to confront her superior directly. In the memoir, she recounts calling him into her office and pointing out the obvious – that her stories weren’t being rejected for journalistic reasons, but out of spite. She told him clearly that she knew what was happening and that she wasn’t going to tolerate it any longer.

She also shared that her agent and lawyer had prepared legal action for discrimination and sexual harassment — a step she was ready to pursue if necessary.

That firm stance changed the situation. The retaliatory behavior stopped, and she felt vindicated.

From Struggle to Success

Joan Lunden’s career would go on to reach remarkable heights. She became co-anchor of Good Morning America in 1979, where she worked for nearly two decades alongside hosts like David Hartman and Charlie Gibson. Her success made her one of broadcast news’ most recognizable and trusted faces.

But this candid chapter from her early years sheds light on the challenges that many women faced — and still face — in newsroom culture and other industries where power imbalances can create opportunities for exploitation.

Why This Story Matters

In sharing this story now, decades later, Lunden isn’t just revisiting the past — she’s contributing to a larger conversation about workplace dynamics and the long road many women have traveled to gain equality and respect.

Her account is not just about one incident. It reflects a wider pattern that countless women have experienced: when they said “no,” their careers or reputations were put at risk.

By choosing to speak up, Lunden shows how resilience, courage, and clarity can change the trajectory of a person’s career. Her experience serves as both a reminder and an inspiration — particularly as industries continue to grapple with how to support, protect, and uplift women in all professions.
